How to replace a broken window
Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.
Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame
To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.
Step 2: Clean the new glasses
You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.
The third step is to reinstall the glass
Attach the window frames to the panes. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair the damaged area
Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.
Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area
After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.
Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
