How To

How to replace a broken window

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
