How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
