How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
