How To

How to replace a broken window

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
