How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
