How do you replace a broken window?
One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. This repair will take only 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.
First step: Remove the old glass from its frame
To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.
Step 2: Clean the new glasses
To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.
Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass
Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair any damage.
Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.
Fiveth step: Seal the repair area
After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.
Allow the caulking to cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
