FAQ

Can a handyman give me suggestions for how to improve my home's condition?

Absolutely! In fact, a handyman is trained in all areas of home repair and maintenance. A handyman knows what to fix and what not. Do not hesitate to seek advice whenever you are in need.

Which is better: contracting, or being a handyman.

As you only require yourself and your tools, being a handyman takes less time than contracting. However, you must be able to manage your own workload and schedule, while contractors typically rely on subcontractors to do most of the work.

What training do I need to give a handyman in order to do my job?

No. Handymen already possess the knowledge and skills to complete any project. All you need to do is give them the materials to complete the job.

What qualifications do I need to be a handyman?

As a handyman, patience is the most important skill. Experience with electrical systems, plumbing skills, and home maintenance is a must.

There are many job opportunities for qualified people, but you might not be qualified if you don’t know what they mean.

This is why you might consider enrolling in a school that specializes in these types of courses.

Is it possible to have my faucets fixed by a handyman?

While a handyman is capable of handling minor repairs, they will not be qualified to do major projects like wiring up a house or installing custom-made cabinets. There are many things a handyman could do for minor home improvements.

Are handymen insured?

Yes! Yes. Most insurance companies will cover liability claims for bodily injury and accidental property damage up to $1,000,000. Your insurance company will usually compensate you for any damages that occur during the project.

Is it worth paying a handyman an hourly rate or per-project basis.

Personal preference is the most important factor. Some people prefer to pay an hourly rate so that they know how much their handyman costs. Some prefer to pay per completed job, as they might be working on multiple projects simultaneously. It doesn't matter which way you go, it works great.

How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
