How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
