How To

How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
